Winter family photography, the best time of year?

When families think about booking a photoshoot, winter is often the last season they consider. The cold, unpredictable weather and shorter days can make winter family photography feel like a risky choice, but in my experience winter can be the most glorious time of year.

Just recently, I photographed a family outdoors in December on such a beautifully sunny day, where the low winter light was so stunning, it lit the family up like angels. The location was at a friend of the families house and grounds, so we spent the morning exploring, chatting and taking a few family portraits along the way.

If you’re considering a winter family shoot – or have dismissed the idea altogether, here are five things worth knowing…

1. Low winter light is beautiful!

One of the biggest advantages of a winter photoshoot is the light, the low winter sun can be absolutely stunning. In winter, the sun sits much lower in the sky which creates beautifully soft and flattering lighting, rather than high sun which can create harsh shadows.

2. Dealing with the cold

A common concern with winter family session is whether children will cope with the cold, no one likes standing round freezing – least of all me! The reality is that documentary family winter sessions won’t involve standing outside for hours on end freezing cold. The session will always be designed around an activity that keeps everyone moving, like a brisk walk around the lake, a game of football or tig – and taking breaks to pop inside for a hot chocolate, which is always a popular idea with children!

3. Embrace the season and wear cosy layers

Layers, coats, scarves and knitwear add texture and depth to photographs and it’s all part of the story. Let’s face it, we don’t all spend all year in light breezy summer clothing, so it’s lovely to embrace the season and capture family moments at this time of year. Rather than being a drawback, winter clothing can really enhance the overall feel of a family shoot and tell a rich family story.

4. Winter locations are quieter and more relaxed

Another often-overlooked benefit of a winter family shoot is how quiet many locations become. Parks, countryside spots and coastal areas are generally far less busy than in spring or summer which is a huge bonus, in many locations you might get the place to yourself! We often pop to the seaside on a cold winters day, just skip the ice cream and opt for hot fish and chips watching the waves instead!

5. Planning around the weather

It’s understandable to worry about winter weather, but to be honest, the same thing can happen in summer here in the UK. Family photography sessions are always planned thoughtfully around conditions rather than pushing ahead regardless. If the weather is just terrible, the sessions can be adjusted to another location indoors or rescheduled completely to a better day.

Winter shoots aren’t about taking chances, they’re about working with the season.

Is a family photography session in winter, right for your family?

Winter family photography isn’t a compromise – it’s simply a different look and feel. If you’re drawn to softer light, quieter locations and a relaxed, natural approach, winter might actually be the perfect time for your family shoot.

This December session is a great example of how winter conditions can produce beautiful warm, honest and meaningful photographs.
